Week 4 College Football Viewing Guide

Welcome back to Week 4 of the college football season. Here’s a quick recap of what we know so far: the teams that everybody thought were going to be the best teams are the best teams.

Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma seemed like the best teams before the season began and the only surprise here is how good these teams have looked. Could this be the best Alabama team of the dynasty? Can all 5 of these teams survive the regular season gauntlet unblemished?

There certainly may be some good teams outside that top 5, but at the very least, the teams outside that top 5 are filled with significantly more question marks than anybody inside the top 5.

Here’s what to watch this Saturday:

How to watch: Grab the next flight to St. Louis, throw down some toasted ravioli, and head on out to Columbia, Missouri for the early kickoff, or roll out of bed, turn on ESPN for Corso’s headgear pick, and then keep watching as the camera cuts to the Black and Gold land of Mizzou at 9am (all times PST).

Storyline: Are the Dawgs vulnerable? Missouri impressed in their dominating win over a Wyoming squad that has some future NFL talent, but then managed to just squeak out of West Lafayette with a win against Purdue last week. With the semi-rivalry with Tennessee coming next week and some top QB talent, Mizzou may, just may, have a chance to catch the Dawgs napping during this early game.

Prospect to Watch: Missouri QB Drew Lock is rumored to be the top QB on draft boards for some NFL franchises and Saturday might be the closest thing he finds to an NFL defense this season. While the Mizzou run game is a threat, all eyes will definitely remain on Lock to see what he can do against the Dawgs talented D.

How to Watch: Grow out your ‘bama bangs and load up the truck for the marquee kickoff in Tuscaloosa or be sure to follow the routine of tuning into CBS at 12:30pm for the SEC game of the week.

Storyline: Aggie fans are feeling mighty fine about the direction of their program after the Aggies close call against Clemson 2 weeks back, but Jimbo’s first SEC road game will be an even bigger challenge in somehow trying to slow down the champs in their Tuscaloosa home. Whether this ends up being a close one or ‘Bama continues their streak of 50+ point games, these two teams guarantee some Saturday afternoon entertainment.

Prospect to Watch: You can just throw a dart at Alabama’s roster and you’ll be pretty much guaranteed to land on a stud.

How to Watch: Do exactly what you did for UT’s big win over the Trojans last week or turn on Fox at 1:30pm.

Storyline: Is Texas back? How much do these two teams have left after huge games in the Lone Star State last Saturday? I’m hesitant to say it, given how many times that Texas has tricked us before, but this game could go a long way in determining who plays in the Big XII Championship Game in December.

Prospect to Watch: Texas CB Kris Boyd is a special talent who will likely be the shutdown corner assigned to stop your NFL team’s favorite receiver in two years’ time.

How to Watch: Rent a boat and mozy on down the Tennessee River to join the Vol Navy for a great day of sailgating or tune into ESPN at 4pm.

Storyline: Sure, neither of these teams are going to set the college football world on fire this season, but as the SEC slogan goes, “It just matters more.” And nowhere is that as apparent as the pain and suffering you’ll see in the eyes of the losing fanbase in this one, and although it sounds cruel, it is unbelievably entertaining when the camera cuts to the losing fans in this SEC rivalry.

Prospect to Watch: Gators QB Felipe Franks is one to watch. He’s not highly likely to be dominating on Sundays anytime soon, but he has one incredible name and is always good for a few amazing plays a game.

How to Watch: Pack all your friends in the VW van and head south down I-5 from Portland before parking on campus and enjoying the incredibly scenic walk over the river to one-and-only Autzen Stadium or tune in to ABC at 5pm.

Storyline: Stanford has somewhat quietly climbed to #7 in the country behind a steady defense, an impressive QB in K.J. Costello, and an all-world receiving corps. Oregon has been dominant in it’s 3–0 start, with the catch being that they’ve played the Little Sisters, Brothers, and Cousins of the Poor. Now with Stanford, College Gameday, and the national spotlight coming to town, we’ll learn a whole lot more about what first year head coach Mario Cristobal has cooking up in Eugene.

Prospect to Watch: It’s gotta be Oregon’s QB Justin Herbert who is in the running to be the first QB off the board in next year’s draft. Herbert has torn apart the weak defenses he’s faced so far, but can take his stock to a whole new level with a primetime performance against Stanford’s defense.
