Hi my name is Ethan Sanni-Thomas and this is my journal of Ideas in Antiquity. Registration is where the beginning of college begins. The stress is also just beginning as you try to find your classes and figure out what classes you are in. Its difficult because you have 3 months of summer and then all of a sudden boom your all free days turns into class through out the whole day. I did not register for any classes in fact I think they just put me in the class because I was undecided of my major but I know certain people in Howard who want to see my succeed.I remember the stressful days of calling every Howard office because I was trying to figure out my schedule and then things were even more hectic because at this time Howard did not make a decision on whether they wanted to let people on campus. I was so excited to go to campus and get away from my hometown I want to get out and explore the whole world and Washington D.C. was going to be my first spot. Oh wow I’m getting really off track well lets get back on it shall we.When I learned that I was taking this class me and my dad decided to search it up on what this class could possibly be about and somewhere along the line I saw the word leadership. Now this caught my eye because I have always wanted to know how to be a leader. Because I certainly can not look at some of the most important leaders that this nation has as a good example.(A certain name that rhymes with Roland Bump and he sits at the most important chair in the whole nation).The first day of class we were introducing each other and talking to each other about the class and what we will expect out of the class. To be honest I thought it was boring because I am about to hear the same “ Hey guys, how are you doing I’m your professor and then you would make us introduce ourselves even though I did not want to. But instead the professor really caught my attention. He instantly started teaching and made us have a full discussion, trying to figure out what we know so far. I liked how the professor was teaching this class he had a lot of confidence and a lot swag. He also made funny jokes and made me entertained so I wanted to be involved in the class and not just feel like it was just another class I had to pass to graduate. The professor made it very interesting. But I am not going to lie I thought when I was at Howard all my professors would be black and when I saw a different color skin than mine I was shocked but when the professor started speaking I was like I cant judge someone I don’t even know After we signed up for Kallion and Medium on the first day we were basically already starting class. I mean sure I was bummed we started class early early but I was also a little bit intrigued. In the discussion we talked about what makes a good leader. Even though I was to shy to say something I liked hearing other peoples inputs on what makes a good leader to them. They really opened my eyes because I never though a good leader really had such qualities I was just thinking they just know how to lead a certain group of people and know how to take action. To be honest the first people that come to mind when I hear the word leader I instantly think of my favorite anime characters. Yes I watch anime and you should watch it to or you are very uncultured. They are the type of leaders o always be inspiring to other and make they chase their dreams. Never give up is the same phrase they all say and that what I think of when someone says the word leader to me.Apparently they have studies on stuff like this which blows my mind but hey gotta learn some way right. There five different qualities in a good leader. The first one is the ability to make the right decision at the right time. Pretty much spoken for all leaders should be able to do that. I mean how can people follow you if you don’t make the right decisions at the right time. The second is to be able to establish good relationships with people. A leader doesn’t have to be well liked by everyone but they do have to be respected enough to where people will follow him or her with there lives and future decisions.we also discussed the behaviors leaders should engage in. Of course if you a leader and people are going to look up to you. You have to act a certain way. Leaders should act professional and always be a good mentor. Leaders should always have a good behavior but they should also have a certain kind of reputation. Reputation in a leader is very important. Reputation in anyone is important because you want to know what type of person you are dealing with, what kind of person you are following. If you a good leader your reputation has to show it. That you can meat the qualities and never steer people the wrong way. The final quality that ever good leader should have is knowledge. A good leader has to have knowledge in the area they are guiding there followers through. You cant follow someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Like if you had a broken foot would you go to a doctor that doesn’t know how to properly heal a broken foot, no.We also talked about certain leaders we can look to and admire. Some of my personal favorites are Michael Jordan because he is this best basketball player of all-time and he constantly preaches about how hard he worked. I am eventually going to be in the NBA and I am going to surpass him and become the next greatest basketball player to ever play the game of basketball. Another one is Barack Obama and its not just because he was the first black president to be elected. What he did during his time at the office and also his powerful speeches really inspire to become a better man everyday. Barack almost made me feel like I can become the president if I wanted to do but I know I am not that smart for thatIf you have not noticed the people I selected are African American. I think that is another aspect of being a leader you have to have something in common of something that can relate you to the people that follow you.There is another leader that no one really likes but you can not argue he was a very good leader . Adolf Hitler a mass murder but he was able to lead a whole nation into genocide and also into a world war but his people followed him to the end.We also read how an assignment you gave us called “Looking for Leadership Slowly”. You also made us do the exercise. First we would Google portraits and choose a person that we did not know. We would then write down details about their facial features. To be honest I do not know what facial expressions are gonna say about a person because people make different faces everyday but hey that is just my opinion. We would then write our impressions of them and what gave us those impressions. We the came together as a class and spoke about some peoples portraits. We discussed what we thought of them and what kind of leaders we thought they were. This exercise what most definitely interesting because I have never done anything like this before. Making me think of what a good leader really is and how we judge people based on their facial features.So that means when I become a leader I have the have these certain qualities and also I always gotta keep a smile on my face I don’t want someone thinking bad about me because of the facial expressions I make.It really opens my mind differently then expected. Speaking of minds we also read some of The Odyssey. You gave us passages based of the relationships of Athena and Telemachus. Athena sparked courage and Telemachus leadership development. She showed how invested she was to make Telemachus return to a position of power. Even though she hurt him she did it out of the goodness of her heart. This made Telemachus stronger and he became what Athena always wanted him to do becoming the head of the Odysseus.I see what type of skills she was showing all the time on TV. Sometimes showing and exposing someones weakness makes them stronger and better on in life. Heck my dad does this to me all the time. He always tries to tell me Im very lazy and he gets angry and yells at me hoping it makes me change myself. Overall the class so far I really like it. Of course no student likes the work that comes with it but the discussions and how the teacher actually makes me feel included I am glad I did not decide to drop this class. So far learning about leadership when I thought I was already a good enough leader is certainly interesting. I can’t wait to see where the professor is going to lead us next. Because this class can help me not only through college but beyond that too.
