Animals have been known to not have many rights in society as of today. Animals have been getting abused for years and still are today. The topic of animal rights has been very controversial to many even because an abundance of people barely know the background on the topic. Today, there are various groups trying to help save the animals and help gain their full rights. The ASPCA organization has been trying to prevent animal abuse since the late 1800’s. Today that organization is still fighting for the rights of all animals and wont stop until animals are free from abuse. They want people to understand that animals have just as many rights as humans and should be treated better than they are now.

The source I chose is a webpage from the ASPCA unit. Lorraine Murray created this article on the webpage, who is an American author and columnist. The webpage is written on the britannica platform, which is a website that has published webpages on various topics. The creators have background of animal abuse or have seen animal abuse happen which is why they are able to write about such a controversial topic. I find this webpage to be reliable because it goes into depth about the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and how laws have come to be to regulate the abuse of animals. But, the page seems unreliable due to no cited sources. The author included several statistics but never cited the sources where the statistics were originally from, not citing sources is a true sign of an unreliable source because the readers are unsure if the information in real or not. The main argument is that there should be a law against animal abuse, and how the ASPCA created a declaration of the rights of animals. The webpage also talks about how the ASPCA has brought animals who need homes to great families. The ASPCA,”shelter in Manhattan places, on average, 2,000 animals (about 1,400 cats and 400 dogs) into new homes annually”. I believe the authors information comes from research/scientific study because there are statistics in the webpage that prove the ASPCA has helped animals and has made a change to animals rights. This is because they have arrested people due to animal cruelty, ”The officers of the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Department make upwards of 75 arrests for animal cruelty each year”. This proves the ASPCA is actually making a difference and trying to help society realize that abusing animals is gruesome.

The primary purpose of this source is to inform. The author wants to reader to become educated on the ASPCA organization, how it works, and what they do. They author also wants the readers to be informed on animal rights and how the ASPCA has been helping fight for the rights of animals. It goes through the timeline of the ASPCA and when they went into action to help animal rights. Also, the author uses statistics and specific dates which is usually a sign that they want the readers to be informed about something. The authors main audience are people interested in the topic of animal cruelty also people who are interested in the ASPCA organization. The author talks about how the ASPCA works, what they do, and how are they trying to help with animal abuse. The author uses pathos when the source talks about how Bergh spoke out about ,” the suffering of animals — for example, in bullfights, cockfights, and slaughterhouses and in everyday incidents, such as the beating of horses, that took place on the streets”. The author uses logos when they talk about the ASPCA shelter in Manhattan,” places on average, 2,000 animals (about 1,400 cats and 400 dogs) into new homes annually”. The author uses ethos when talking about the background and introducing the ASPCA organization, the ASPCA was “ one of the earliest organizations to publicize and work toward the abolition of cruel treatment of animals”. The author uses these appeals to help reinforce the main idea of the source and to show how the ASPCA is helping with animal cruelty. Also, it targets the audience because it informs the readers to learn more about the ASPCA and how they are helping decrease animal harm in society.
