A Poem Revealing Some Essential Truths

Despite the fact

that we live in

the “Information Age”,

the true meaning of

intelligence is often obscured.

It is often equated with

perfection, or the search of it,

in the pursuits of the mind.

But despite the ever-growing force

bringing us all together,

we fail to realize that we should still

celebrate our differences and

the beautiful diversity of

opinions, talents, and experiences.

Just as we come in

different forms,

so would our aptitudes.

Not to say intelligence

is fixed and constant, no,

far from it, but

even a sharp person

is entitled to

some dull edges that

they are working

on honing.

Thank you for reading! This poem was written in response to some societal pressures I was feeling during my second semester of college. It was largely just an overwhelming feeling of being pressured to belong, in clubs, friendships, and in my major/field. I knew that people who didn’t neatly fit in one box were desperately needed in our global and interdisclipinary road, and I tried to express the need for this in my writing.

Being myself, with my different interests and hobbies has led me to many accollades and opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. So I can safely say that my younger self was right in her feelings!
