How The Prisoner of Azkaban Sparked My Love for Movies

All of us had favourite movies we loved watching endlessly as kids. The ones we’d put on when we’re going through it, or maybe, because they sparked something inside us. A few examples come to mind like Ratatouille wanting to inspire the chef inside of us, or if you’re older, a movie like Whiplash — which I recently talked about — sparking an ambition to master an art, or The Queen’s Gambit suddenly making all of us chess lovers.

For me, I don’t think I ever saw a movie as a kid that had a bigger impact on me more than Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. I could create an entirely separate discussion on each of Alfonso Cuarón’s creative and technical choices that made this movie special, but to summarize, he created the most cinematic film in the Harry Potter franchise.

I am a firm believer that good filmmaking can be subtle. And while young Colin wasn’t gushing over things like cinematography or a John Williams score, I think it subliminally…
