Can your personality be changed?

You have met someone for the first time, and after exchanging pleasantries and shooting a few basic questions about their whereabouts, the next set of questions are an effort to understand their personality.

Before I answer why we do this, it is important to understand what exactly does personality mean.

With the definition in place, it is important to address a fundamental question:

This is a question neuroscience, psychiatry, and more importantly, the study of psychology has been battling with for a very long time.

Even though there have been breakthroughs in the field of behavioural therapy, mental conditioning, and DNA study, we cannot confidently ascertain that a person is born with a certain personality or if it is developed over a period of time.

There is a new field of study in biology called epigenetics. It deals with how organisms can change by modifying how their genes are expressed.

We all know that the blueprint of our DNA cannot be changed, but based on epigenetics, the way a DNA expresses can certainly be changed. Similarly, it is possible that we could be born with certain personalities, but maybe we have control over how we end up expressing it.

This is the right time to go back to the original question we had at the beginning: why do we try to understand another human being’s personality?

Be it a job opening or deciding to choose a life partner, all of us want to know whether we are making the right choices and if there is compatibility. It ain’t practical to understand what makes someone at the DNA level, but it would definitely be helpful if we can understand how a person behaves or what his/her character is.

This is why personality is important, and why we try to understand it.
