Tricked You

A short story for your enjoyment

It was a diagnosis that everyone feared, cancer. As he sat in the doctor’s office, Jim saw his life flash before his eyes, all the things he wanted to do, but might not get to do them. “And the prognosis?” he asked the doctor.

A grim look told him it would not be good, “You’ve got less than one year to live,” the doctor told him.

One of the first dares that he took was to take the scuba diving tour in Australia that guaranteed you would see a great white shark from a shark cage. And it was as thrilling adventure as he ever went on. One shark would go by the cage with his mouth wide open, then come back the other way with a look on his face like he was laughing.

Back on the boat, Jim said that the Dive Master, “Any bet those sharks are thinking, you be sure you never leave that cage cuz I’ve got the munchies?”

The divemaster laughed thinking there’s always one with every tour. Always some idiot who likes to make some wisecrack as if a shark would think anything like that.

After the scuba diving vacation, Jim went home and began writing his memoirs of his life. What did it matter at that point? It’s not like he was ever going to see the inside of a prison cell or courtroom. It was no way in ambiguous what Jim wrote in his memoirs, key details of everything he did were written in, there would be no misunderstanding unless the person reading was a total idiot.

Jim was a serial killer, one of the most prolific of all time. And when it was done, he sent it to the lead detective on the case of all his victims. With a scotch and a cigar, he leaned back in his recliner satisfied that he beat the cops.

Two days after he sent his memoirs, there was a knock on the door with the shout, “Police!”

Jim opened the door with a smile, “Yes, officers?”

He was quickly subdued, and taken to the police station, handcuffed to the table in the interrogation room, he didn’t really care, he was going to die before they ever could get him to trial. With his eyes closed, he hummed and whistled a tune as the door to the interrogation room opened and he didn’t bother to open them when the detective sat in the chair on the other side.

“Well Jim,” the cop said, “you gave us quite a ride.”

Jim’s heart almost stopped when he recognized the voice, he opened his eyes to see the doctor who told him he was going to die soon.

“Sorry to tell you but the cancer diagnosis was fake, we had to get you to confess.”
