What to remember when writing

This thread is how to write a piece of your own and what to remember when writing it.

What I mean by this is that no idea you come up with will ever be just yours, a new idea in the writing world. So what will you do once you’ve hit this realisation? You create your own personal spin on whichever your idea is and make your own. Because in the writing world no idea or prompt will ever be original as the craft has been around for centuries, this is something you will have to expect in this world.

There will always be an idea similar to yours, take cliche’s for instance. There is a reason they are called that. If you’re writing a book about boy meet girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after.. it’s been done a million times before. But what counts is not what’s been done previously, it’s what you can do with this knowledge. A personal twist on events, adding something new to the story line and make it your own wondrous creation.

Your first draft of the book will never be your only one and you have to expect this with writing. The main part is writing is hard and requires a lot of work, much more than you believe or is seen. You have to be prepared to edit and re-edit a million times over until your piece is perfect, then even if it’s not.. you’ll have to be prepared for that too unfortunately.

Sometimes you may have to scrap a plot or chapter all at once, not because it isn’t good but sometimes it just doesn’t suit what you’ve written. Preparing yourself for this is a good way not to get disheartened as you plan your journey to being a writer.

In every writer’s career they will get the lovely gift and receive writers block. This does not mean to say your inspiration won’t return, think about it as it’s gone on a holiday whether it be long or short. If you stress about this I can assure you it won’t come back, at least not as instantly as you may want. Therefor when it happens take a chill pill, relax and enjoy a bit of time off. You never know, it may inspire you by being uninspired.

Some people seem to have the idea in their head that if their work is not liked by a handful of people, they may as well give up. This is not true, in fact it is the worse thing you could do. Think about it this way; you write a certain genre, they read a certain genre and so on. You cannot control peoples likes and dislikes so do not even attempt to.

Secondly, do not try to please everyone with your work. If your books about cliche bad boys, not add a fire breathing dragon into the mix to spice up the minds of fantasy readers. It’ll put a lot of people off if you constantly mix genre’s, so keep your own and stay with it. It’s best for your work and the readers that actually enjoy your writing.

Thirdly, enjoy what you write otherwise others wont. If you don’t like your own work, how do you expect others to? Everyone will notice if you don’t enjoy your hard work and effort you put in your writing, because to put it bluntly there wont be any and it’s easily read between the lines. So please, only write pieces worth enough to you as you’d want them to be to your readers.
