Mental health in a black society

Growing up in a society where people give certain issues less value because it seen less traditional or it carry less value in their culture, left a lot of people to into pieces they cant fix anymore. I was born and raise in a village where people are more concern about farming, culture and tradition, and family, made me realise that our parents did not prepare us on how to approach a lot of real life issues rather then what is viewed as part of the tradition within the society.

Now when I look back I realise how important it is to prepare young ones about the real world and how to solve mental issues that may arise. Men are regarded as powerful being physically and emotionally more than woman which is definitely wrong because we are all human. Men were and still seen as the head of the family and a protector, and when a men goes through emotional break down are seen as coward, for example crying at a funeral is unwelcoming. In my opinion I think it is poisonous and draining to keep your emotions locked up.

In a society where mental healthy is given less attention and where people who are depressed can not express themselves really drive a lot of people to their death. Parents cannot listen but they shout and instead of correcting they compare and judge their kids. It is hard for parents to notice depression in their kids because they are not aware of it or probably never heard of it, for example when you isolate yourself it is seen as disrespectful but you are really going through some hard times. When you find yourself in a situation you were never prepared about it will be difficult to make a good decision.

Our parents never talked about mental healthy and there are few programs or campaign about mental health. This is because people are being judged by the same people who where supposed to uplift them and be there for them offering support. People with mental illness in a black society are believed to bewitched which is certainly untrue. This is because traditionally, a traditional healer is more preferred than a person who understand the person emotions and the psychological wellbeing of the person for example a social worker.
