First Response to Design Brief

(Week 4: Presentation — Within the Mansion)

My initial concept for this project is to create a stressless space that motivates people to work. I want it to be a space where people can also exchange their knowledge and lifestyle, and this concept has led me to the idea of connecting spaces and people.

The bubble diagram above shows both direct and indirect connections between spaces.

This conceptual model was created by using the idea of connection from the bubble diagram. I focus on the idea of motivation, stresslessness, and connectivity. Each layer of paper represents each level within the building.

The watercolour texture is used to represent the relaxing, refreshing and light atmosphere within the space. Relationship between layers is created by the porosity of the holes, and the threads that connect all layers. Additionally, the different number of holes in each layer also represents the level of privacy required within the space.

By flipping the model upside down, the colours on the surfaces are now hidden, and only the colours of the threads are visible. This is to symbolise how the connection between spaces will make the energy flow through the whole building and will make the building more alive.

In this drawing, watercolour painting in the background shows how each space is blended together. The circles no longer represent spaces, but they represent users of the building instead. I used colourful lines to connect the circles to show my aim of using the spatial arrangement within the building to enhance interaction between people.

In terms of atmosphere, I want to create a space that makes people focus and relax at the same time. In this drawing, walls, floor plates, and different elements are floating around in a typical rectangular room. This implies an atmosphere which allows people to have freedom as well as encourage them to focus on their work.
